Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Pattern Tutorial

This is an easy Christmas stocking quilt block pattern. Combine squares and rectangles to make a 12 inch stocking block. Make a table runner quilt fast!

Fast Christmas Stocking Quilt Blocks

Would Christmas decorating be complete without a stocking? Some think not. You can whip up this stocking quilt block pretty quickly.

Make a few using different but coordinating fabrics for each. Use them to make a table runner and show it off on your dining room table (whether it holds a holiday dinner or not).

Use scraps or yardage!

Block Fabric Requirements

6 Inch Christmas Stocking Quilt Block

From Fabric 1 (white) cut:
A: 1 (2 3/4 x 1 1/2 inch)
B: 1 (1 1/2 X 1 1/4 inch)
C: 1 (3 1/2 X 3 inch)
D: 1 (5 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch)
E: 1 (2 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch)
F: 4 (1 x 1 inch) (shown as half square triangles)*

***Note: The 6 inch block has no bottom background strip (G).***

From Fabric 2 (med gray) cut:

H: 1 (3 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch)

From Fabric 3 (dark red) cut:
I: 1 (3 1/2 X 3 inch)
J: 1 (4 1/2 X 2 1/2 inch)

12 Inch Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Pattern

From Fabric 1 (white) cut:
A: 1 (5 x 2 1/2 inch)
B: 1 (6 X 5 1/2 inch)
C: 1 (1 1/2 X 1 inch)
D: 1 (9 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch)
E: 1 (4 x 2 1/2 inch)
F: 4 (1 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch) (shown as half square triangles)*
G: 1 (12 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch)

From Fabric 2 (med gray) cut:
H: 1 (6 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch)

From Fabric 3 (dark red) cut:
I: 1 (6 X 5 1/2 inch)
J: 1 (8 1/2 X 4 inch)

*Note: Block pieces F are squares and will be paired with rectangular block piece J. The stitch and flip method will be used to make angled corners.

When cutting very short or small pieces of fabric you may want to cut your fabric lengths a little longer. Then, trim once stitched.

Choose your block size, 6 inch or 12 inch, or both and let's make a Christmas stocking quilt block!

Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Instructions

WOF = Width Of Fabric
Seams are 1/4 inch unless otherwise noted.

***Refer to the quilt block assembly diagrams when stitching blocks.***

Make the Foot of the Christmas Stocking

Step 1a Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the three small squares (F). Align one in each corner, except the top right, of the rectangle. The direction of the marked lines should should be as follows:

Top: forward slash (/)
Bottom: back slash (\), forward slash (/)

Step 1a Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Pattern: draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of squares (F).

Step 1b Stitch on the drawn line of each of the three squares. Trim each corner 1/4 inch away from the stitched line.

Step 1c Flip each corner triangle right side up and press the seams toward the
triangles.

Step 1c Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Pattern: Press the seam each corner triangle towards the triangle.

Attach Side Panels to Foot and Shin

Step 2 Stitch side panel (E) to the left side of rectangle (J) used to make the
'foot' of the Christmas stocking. Stitch side panel (C) to the left side of rectangle (I) used to make the 'shin'.

Press the seams toward the side panels.

Step 2 Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Pattern: Stitch side panel (E) to left side of rectangle (J). Stitch side panel (C) to the left side of rectangle (I).

Stitch Foot to Shin

Step 3 Stitch 'foot' section (E/J) to 'shin' section (C/I), making a 'boot'. Press the seam up towards the 'shin'.

Step 4 Stitch side panel (D) to 'boot/shin' section.

Step 4 Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Pattern: Step 4 Stitch side panel (D) to 'boot/shin' section.

Make the Collar

Step 5 With right sides together, stitch collar (H) to the right hand side of
side strip (A). With right sides together, stitch side strip (B) to right hand side
of collar (H). Press the seams toward background strips (A) and (B).

Step 5 Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Pattern: make the Christmas Stocking collar.

Attach Collar and Background Strip to Boot

Step 6 With right sides together, stitch collar section to boot section. Stitch
background strip (G) to 'foot' section.

Note: If you cut oversized background strips, finger press a crease in the center of collar and boot. Match the creases and stitch the sections together.

Press the top seam toward towards the collar section. Press the bottom seam toward the background strip.

Step 6 Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Pattern: stitch collar section to boot section. Stitch background strip (G) to
stocking.

Trim Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Pattern

Step 7 Trim the block to size: 12 1/2 inches square for the 12 inch Christmas
stocking quilt block pattern; 6 1/2 inches square for the 6 inch block.

Step 7 Christmas Stocking Quilt Block Pattern: Trim the block to size.

Christmas Stocking Quilt Pattern

This Christmas table runner quilt pattern should be quick and easy! Perfect for gift giving. It would also make a nice wall hanging. It's approximately 18 x 66 inches.

The Christmas table runner quilt pattern is made up of three different Christmas quilt blocks: three Christmas tree quilt block patterns, one Christmas ornament quilt block pattern and one Christmas stocking quilt block pattern.

Each is a 12 inch finished block, 12 1/2 inches unfinished.

The single row of Christmas blocks is surrounded by a one inch inner border and a 2 inch outer border.

The outer border and binding our done in the same red fabric.
